Can you paint furniture with wall paint? This is a question that many people ask themselves. You might have interior paint left over after painting your walls and the last thing you want to do is waste money by pouring it away.
Many people buy oil-based or latex paint for their walls and most of them wonder if it’s a good idea to refinish their furniture using the remaining paint.
Truth is, you can use wall and ceiling paint to restore or refinish your furniture. No need for you to waste your wall paint, you can save a penny by painting furniture with the leftover wall paint.
You might also need to match the color of your furniture with that of your walls. You can purchase wall paint and use it to paint on furniture as well as the walls.
One thing you need to know is that the paint might not be durable but with the right measure in place, the paint can adhere and stand the test of time.
Difference Between Wood Paint and Wall Paint
Wood paint and wall paints are used at home to improve the state of furniture and the walls. However, the two are completely different and that is why they have different uses.
The difference between wood paint and wall paint is the way the two are manufactured. Both used different raw materials which makes them work differently.
Wall paints are made of synthetic resin and wood paints are made of unsaturated polyester and polyurethane among other raw materials.
Wall paints work best on drywalls or surfaces made of brick, cement, and mortar. There are oil-based that work with oil minerals and paint thinner and there are water-based wall paints like latex paint that works with water.
Wood paints are formulated for wood painting purposes and they don’t work well on walls just like wall paints are formulated for walls and might not adhere to wood surfaces.

Types Of Wall Paints And Wall Paint Which Can Be Used On Furniture
You’ve already made up your mind that you want to paint a piece of furniture, but you’ve yet to choose the type of wall paint to use.
Before you head out to the hardware store, you probably need to know the different types of wall paints and finishes and which ones will work well on your wood furniture.
Below are the different types of wall paints and we will go on to discuss if they will work on wood or not.
1. Matte Paint
Matte paints are also called flat paints and they produce the least amount of shine.
Matte paint provides the most coverage but they are least durable because it can easily be damaged if treated with a cleaner.
Flat paints are mostly used on low-traffic parts of the house like ceilings or dinings.
Can You Use A Matte Paint On Wood Furniture?
Matte paint provides full coverage and creates a smooth surface making it ideal for those old furniture pieces you want to bring back to life.
The paint does a pretty good job in concealing nail holes and any type of scratches on the wood surfaces.
If the furniture you intend to paint has large imperfections then you might need a wood filler to repair the patches.
However, if the furniture has small imperfections then two coats or more will make your furniture look flawless.

Preparation Of The Furniture
Step 1: Clean The Piece Of Furniture and Check For Wear and Tear
Wipe off dust and check if there is any imperfection on the wood.
Step 2: Sanding
The next thing you need to do before you start painting your furniture is to ensure that you sand the furniture slightly.
Use a fine-grit sanding sponge because anything with more grit will leave visible lines on the wood after painting.
Depending on the size of your furniture, you can sand your furniture for about twenty to thirty minutes.
Don’t sand it down completely to a point you remain with raw wood, you just want to create a good base to start off with.
Step 3: Wipe It Again
Wipe the furniture using a damp cloth after sanding. Make sure you clean all the dust completely then take a dry clean piece of cloth and wipe the furniture until it’s dry.
Step 4: Taping The Edges
If there are any glass parts, take a painter’s tape and tape the edges along with the glass.
Step 5: Apply Primer
Apply a primer using an old or cheap brush that you won’t use again because we recommend an oil-based primer and you might not be able to clean it up after you’re done.
Ensure that you cover the piece you’re painting using a generous amount of primer but don’t apply a lot of it.
Step 6: Sand Again
Let the primer dry for 24 hours then go in with your grit sanding sponge and sand the surface slightly to make it smooth.
Wipe the piece after the slight sanding using a damp cloth and then dry it up using a dry cloth.
Step 7: Painting Process
The best paint to use for a matte finish is latex paint in satin. We recommend that you use a paint extender to slow down the drying time.
An extender also helps the paint to spread well so you won’t end up with brush marks on the furniture after you’re done.
You will need two coats of paint. Not only with latex paint, but whenever you’re painting using any furniture painting on any wood surface, two coats look better than a single paint coat.
The first coat usually looks horrible and that is why you have to go behind with another coat. However, you need to let the first coat dry completely before applying the final coat.
2. Chalk Paint
If the only obstacle you’re facing when you want to paint wood is sanding then this paint might be the best choice for you. This paint is famous because it’s a common cabinet paint.
How To Paint Furniture Using Chalk Paint
Chalk paint does not need sanding and the best thing about it is that you can mix it with a paint of your favorite color and still have an outstanding outcome.
Even though you can paint your piece without sanding, we highly recommend that you sand the wooden surface lightly in between the two coats so you don’t really have any luck.
You will need a top coat after painting your cabinet or any piece of wood after painting it with chalk paint.
You can choose between wax or polyurethane but if you want something durable then use polyurethane.
We have painted a table, cabinet, drawers, and dressers and we loved the way the projects turned out.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
Ensure that you get your brushes, wax brush, sandpaper or a sanding sponge, a piece of cloth, and a paint cleaner to remove unwanted stains.
Step 2: Clean Your Wood Piece
Clean your piece using a dampened cloth and then wipe it using a dry cloth to remove any wetness. Avoid using furniture wax, we highly recommend soapy water in this stage.
Step 3: Painting
With a chip brush, start painting your piece. Two coats would be enough and you don’t need to worry if the surface looks cranny or the brush strokes are showing.
Step 4: Create A Distressed Look
Sand your painted furniture slightly using a sanding sponge to create a perfect distressed look. Don’t go deep because you might sand off the paint and that’s not what we’re aiming at.
Step 5: Wipe Off The Dust
Wipe the piece using a damp cloth to remove the sanding dust.
Step 6: Seal The Paint
Chalk paint doesn’t have a sealer so you will need to take a separate brush and apply a coat of clear wax after the paint has completely dried. Wax prevents debris and water from getting in the paint finish.
3. Milk Paint
Milk paint is another popular paint that has been around for a long time and is made from milk protein, limestone clay, and pigment.
The consistency of milk paint is thinner than most paints that is why it chips giving you an aged or worn-out chippy look so you will need more coats to get good coverage.
You will also need a bonding agent to control the chipping.
However, if you want your piece of furniture to have a worn-out look then you can go ahead and paint your piece with milk paint.
How To Paint Furniture Using Milk Paint
Step 1: Clean It Up And Sand It Off
Wipe the piece you want to refinish with a damp cloth and lightly sand it off and wipe it again to remove the sand dust.
Step 2: Paint Prep
After you’re done with sanding and cleaning the furniture, you start with the paint preparation. Mix the paint according to the specified instructions and start painting.
Go in with two coats and if you realize there are any imperfections, you can apply another coat and then apply a polycrylic finish.
The Best Paint For Matching Walls And Furniture
If you want wall paint that will match your furniture and walls then interior latex satin paint is the best pick for you.
Interior latex satin paint is water-based and it contains pigment, binders, additives, and is low in and fumes.
We love this type of paint because it adheres well to wood and dries within two to three hours.
Another thing that makes latex satin paint the best choice is that it is the most affordable option if you’re aiming for furniture and wall color coordination.
You can paint your furniture with latex paint in the easy-to-clean satin sheen or semi-gloss sheen to match your wall colors.
Before you paint your piece, you will need to do some sanding and priming for your home improvement project to look fabulous.
Use a water-based primer for wood furniture but if you intend to paint a metal piece then an oil-based primer will suffice.
For interior pieces, you don’t need all-acrylic paint because the indoor weather is not harsh. A vinyl or vinyl-acrylic paint will work just perfectly.
We carried out a home improvement project and refined an old chair. We used a clear polyurethane topcoat and the outcome was really nice.
A top coat might not be important on pieces in low traffic areas but if you want to refinish a coffee table or a piece of furniture in a high traffic area then you will need a topcoat.
Are acrylic paints good on furniture?
Although acrylic paints are basically formulated for canvas, you will be surprised to get a really nice finish when you try to paint your wood pieces with acrylic paint.
Acrylic paints are easy to apply and you will find out that the paint is much cheaper than other paints in a hardware store.
Acrylic paints dry pretty quickly and they are easy to clean because it tolerates soapy water.
You can give any piece of wood a fresh look in your home with acrylic paint all thanks to its non-toxic properties.
Just like other paints, your wood will need some priming before you apply a coat of acrylic paint for a fine final result.

How to use acrylic spray paint
Prep your wood the way you would when refining with spray paint or other regular paints. Slightly sand the entire surface.
Clean up the surface and dry it up completely with a damp cloth and then go behind with a dry cloth and ensure that it is clean and dry.
Apply a primer to the wood and give it ample time to dry before heading on to the final part.
Apply your spray paint by overlapping 30 by 50%. For a rich finish, you need to go in with two coats.
Although acrylic paints are waterproof, a sealer will be ideal to protect the paint from damage caused by elements.
If your clothes or any other garment gets a stain from acrylic paint, then you need to act fast and submerge the cloth in water and wash it before it dries.
Can you paint exterior pieces with interior paint?
Although both of them are paints with similar uses, interior paints and interior paints hold a lot of differences.
You can paint your outdoor furniture using indoor paints, we don’t recommend that and most experts will tell you it’s not a good idea.
Indoor paints have a different formulation from exterior paints and they cannot tolerate the outdoor climate like the way outdoor paints can. Indoor paints have lesser resins and they flake and crack fast.
Can you paint furniture with laminate finish?
We were stuck in this question for a while before we decided to try to paint a dresser that had a laminate finish.
We did a prep job and went for a good bonding primer. Laminate furniture also takes in latex water-based pretty well.
We were amazed by how amazing the project turned out to be but we must admit that we took a lot of time in the prep stage.
Still wondering if you can paint furniture with wall paint? The information we have given you in this article can help reduce that confusion. Don’t throw away your remaining paints anymore, the trick is to refinish old pieces using the remaining paint.
We love oil-based paints because they are durable but unfortunately, they have high VOC levels. In some countries, you might not get oil-based paints in stores due to the high VOC levels.
